Why We Fear Uncertainty—And How to Get Comfortable With It

More from Chris:

Why We Fear Uncertainty

Why do we fear uncertainty? Well, we’re wired to feel threatened by the unknown. Tens of thousands of years ago, uncertainty often meant danger—whether it was changes in the environment, scarcity of resources, or the presence of predators. Our ancestors’ survival depended on seeking consistency and avoiding risk. This instinct is baked into our human condition and has shaped how we experience fear today.

But here’s the important shift: the nature of uncertainty has changed dramatically. Today, most of us aren’t worried about a saber-tooth tiger chasing us down. We’re not fighting for daily survival in the way our ancestors did. Yet, our brains are still wired to react to uncertainty as if it’s a life-or-death threat.

How to Get Comfortable With the Unknown

The first step toward getting comfortable with uncertainty is to recognize this wiring—and then consciously loosen its grip. When we step back and ask, “What do I really have to fear?” we often realize that today’s uncertainties are not as threatening as our instincts suggest.

For example, a new job, a big move, or an unfamiliar challenge can feel overwhelming. But when we realistically assess the situation, we usually find that the risks are manageable, the consequences are rarely catastrophic, and we have the tools and support to navigate them.

Bringing a level of consciousness to our fears—naming them, exploring them, and asking what’s truly at risk—helps us break old patterns. It allows us to reframe uncertainty not as a threat, but as an opening: a space where growth, creativity, and resilience can emerge.

We come prewired to fear the unknown, but we are also capable of rewiring ourselves. By cultivating awareness, curiosity, and a little courage, we can meet uncertainty with greater calm and clarity. And once we do, we often discover it’s not that bad after all.
