We've all heard or said it ourselves: "I work better under pressure." Tight deadlines, last-minute turnarounds, and the adrenaline of a ticking clock can feel like productivity magic. But what if what you're calling pressure is actually something else?

The truth is, the idea that we “work better under pressure” is a highly individualized concept. But from a scientific and mindful standpoint, it’s not so much about the pressure itself—it’s about achieving a state of flow.

Flow is that sweet spot of deep focus and full engagement, where everything feels just a little more seamless. You’re not just moving—you’re aligned. As I’ve said before, “It’s not about working under pressure. It’s about being in flow.” The compressed timeframe simply removes distractions, demands prioritization, and intensifies focus. But that doesn’t mean chaos is the key.

Flow vs. Frenetic Energy

Too often, we mistake frenetic energy for flow. Frenetic energy is action for the sake of action—movement without meaningful progress. It can feel productive in the moment, but without clarity and intention, it’s just noise.

Those who truly excel during high-pressure moments aren’t fueled by pressure—they’re operating in flow. Their energy is fully aligned with the task at hand. The distractions fall away, and execution becomes instinctive. That’s why we say, “If you want something done, give it to someone busy.” Not because they thrive under stress, but because they’re already in motion—already in flow.

How to Tap Into Flow (Without the Stress)

To stop relying on the myth of pressure and start unlocking flow more consistently, try this:

  • Create boundaries. Give yourself intentional time blocks with clear start and end points.
  • Minimize distractions. Eliminate decision fatigue by simplifying your environment.
  • Work with energy, not against it. Notice when you’re most focused during the day and plan accordingly.
  • Reframe urgency. Replace “I need to hurry” with “I choose to focus.”

You don’t need a deadline to do your best work—you need direction and presence.

So, do you work better under pressure? Maybe. But more likely, you're just tapping into your flow, which you can learn to do without the panic button.
