Managing Energy, Not Just Time

More from Chris:

Time management is a skill we’ve all been told is essential to success. It helps us stay organized, meet deadlines, and make the most of our day. But what I’ve learned—and what doesn’t get talked about enough—is that managing our energy is just as important, if not more so, than managing our time.

When I talk about energy management, I’m referring to how we navigate the highs and lows we all experience throughout the day. It’s about staying as neutral as possible with our energy, making sure we’re not overextending ourselves or, conversely, under-delivering when a task requires more focus.

Staying Neutral and Balanced

As I go through my day, I focus on maintaining a neutral state of energy. By that, I mean ensuring I’m giving each task or project the appropriate amount of energy—not too much and not too little. This balance allows me to approach my work with clarity and efficiency while conserving enough energy for the rest of the day and week.

When we over-supply a task with energy, it can lead to burnout or inefficiency. On the other hand, under-supplying energy often results in rushed or incomplete work. Staying neutral helps me be intentional with both my energy and time, ensuring things are done properly without overextending myself.

Why Energy Management Matters

I’ve learned that managing energy isn’t just about getting through the day; it’s about sustaining the energy I need to be effective, productive, and present for what matters most. By finding this balance, I can reserve enough energy to handle whatever comes next—without feeling drained.

This approach ensures I’m working smarter, not harder. It’s a practice that’s helped me maintain momentum throughout the day and week, leading to more consistent and successful outcomes.

As you go about your tasks today, I encourage you to think not just about how you manage your time but how you manage your energy. When you find that balance, you’ll feel more in control and able to take on your day with ease.
